GOALS
- Foster interdisciplinary collaboration between engineers and surgeons to develop novel surgical devices
- Develop real-world innovative devices through a bench-to-bedside translational process
- Allow trainees with medical and engineering backgrounds to gain experience in hands-on device design
APPROACH
- Assemble teams of engineering and medical professionals and students to work on clinical problems that require an innovative approach
WORKING PROCESS
- Needs assessment (high yield clinical problem)
- Establish limitations of the state of the art
- Establish of design parameters (expert input and benchwork-based)
- Assess of available technologies to achieve the design parameters
- Design and prototype product
- Test prototype in in vitro and in vivo models
